  • Apple Introduces AI-Powered Image Tool Allowing Edits Through Descriptive Commands

Apple has introduced a groundbreaking image editing model, MGIE (MLLM-Guided Image Editing), in collaboration with the University of California, Santa Barbara. This innovative model enables users to describe desired changes in a photo using plain language, eliminating the need for traditional photo editing software. Developed with a focus on user-friendly functionality, the MGIE model supports various image editing tasks such as cropping, resizing, flipping, and adding filters—all initiated through text prompts. MGIE, short for MLLM-Guided Image Editing, utilizes multimodal language models to interpret user prompts effectively and generate visual edits based on user instructions. This includes modifications like changing specific object shapes or enhancing brightness levels, showcasing the model's versatility in handling both simple and complex editing tasks. When using MGIE to edit a photo, users only need to type out their desired changes, providing an intuitive and straightforward approach to image manipulation. The model's capabilities are demonstrated through examples such as transforming a pepperoni pizza image into a healthier version by adding vegetable toppings or enhancing the brightness of a dark photo of tigers in the Sahara by instructing the model to "add more contrast to simulate more light." The researchers behind MGIE emphasize its departure from brief and ambiguous guidance, highlighting its ability to derive explicit visual-aware intentions, resulting in more precise and reasonable image editing outcomes. Through extensive studies across various editing aspects, the researchers demonstrate the effectiveness of MGIE in improving performance while maintaining competitive efficiency. They also express optimism about the MLLM-guided framework's potential contributions to future vision-and-language research. Apple has made the MGIE model available for download on GitHub and provided a web demo on Hugging Face Spaces. Despite the release, Apple has not detailed specific plans for the model beyond research, leaving its future applications open-ended. While Apple may not have been a dominant player in the generative AI space compared to industry giants like Microsoft, Meta, or Google, Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed the company's commitment to incorporating more AI features into its devices in the coming year. In December, Apple researchers further demonstrated their dedication to advancing AI capabilities by releasing the open-source machine learning framework MLX. This framework is specifically designed to simplify the training of AI models on Apple Silicon chips, showcasing Apple's ongoing efforts to stay at the forefront of AI innovation.

  • Google Rebrands Its AI Chatbot as Gemini to Take On ChatGPT

In response to OpenAI's groundbreaking ChatGPT, Google, the former AI industry leader, embarked on a strategic overhaul of its labs, introducing a plethora of AI services such as the Bard chatbot, Duet AI workplace assistant, and a chatbot-style search. The dynamic landscape of artificial intelligence and generative models prompted Google to consolidate its offerings under the umbrella of its latest AI model, Gemini, positioning itself in direct competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus subscription service. Google's Bard chatbot, initially launched in haste in March, has undergone a transformation, now officially rebranded as Gemini. This decision aligns with Google's broader strategy to streamline its AI offerings and enhance their integration. Gemini stands out as a text, voice, and image-capable AI model, a name it shares with the text-driven AI model that powered the Bard chatbot since December. The strategic move includes providing Gemini with more prominent visibility among Google's services. The AI model will have its dedicated app on Android phones, while on Apple devices, Gemini will be seamlessly integrated into the primary Google app. The Gemini AI model, initially presented as a foundational element for Google's AI offerings, saw the release of its most potent version, Gemini Ultra, held back for additional safety testing. Now, Google is making this advanced version available as part of its premium chatbot service, aptly named Gemini Advanced. Accessing this enhanced chatbot experience requires a subscription to the newly introduced AI Premium tier within Google One's cloud backup service. For a monthly fee of $20, Google One subscribers receive a comprehensive package, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT Plus subscription priced at $20. The offering includes not only extra storage (2 terabytes) but also a powerful chat-embedded search experience, in addition to Gmail, Drive, and Photo storage benefits. A notable facet of this transformation is Google's emphasis on Gemini's more expressive personality. Departing from its previous neutral tone, Gemini is designed to "understand intent and react with personality." This shift aligns with the industry trend of imbuing chatbots with distinctive attitudes, akin to the engaging chatbots introduced by smaller AI startups. Sissie Hsiao, VP at Google and general manager for Google Assistant and Bard, highlighted Gemini's user preference in blind tests, stating it as the "most preferred chatbot." Additionally, Google sought feedback from 100 leading AI experts who accessed the advanced version of Gemini, receiving enthusiastic responses. The introduction of Gemini Advanced aims to elevate the user experience with a more expressive and dynamic chatbot. Google is positioning itself to compete with ChatGPT Plus, leveraging the strengths of Gemini, its advanced capabilities, and a competitive pricing model. As the metaverse of AI-driven interactions continues to evolve, Google's strategic moves underscore its commitment to staying at the forefront of this transformative landscape.
