Sony's latest spatial headset is poised to drive advancements in what is being referred to as 'the industrial metaverse

Sony's groundbreaking mixed reality headset took center stage at CES 2024, unveiling its potential in the realm of "spatial content creation." In collaboration with Siemens, the device aims to shape an "industrial metaverse," redefining manufacturing and design processes. While the official name is yet to be disclosed, Siemens refers to it as "Sony’s new spatial content creation system," with a slated release in late 2024.

The headset, featuring "4K OLED microdisplays," was showcased alongside distinctive controllers during Siemens' keynote. The collaboration showcased practical applications, such as Red Bull Racing's engineering and design teams utilizing the headset to visualize a Formula One car's cockpit.

Siemens positions the headset as a tool for the "industrial metaverse," defining it as "an immersive space where people and AI collaborate in real time to solve real-world problems." Emphasizing professional use, the device is tailored for industrial and creative tasks, distinguishing itself from consumer-focused competitors.

Key specifications revealed in a press release include its Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 power, enabling a self-contained experience with dual 4K OLED microdisplays and user-space tracking. With "video see-through" functionality, six cameras, and innovative controllers, Sony envisions a seamless blend of virtual and real-world interaction. Designed for professionals, the headset's balance and ergonomic design offer an immersive experience without compromising comfort.

Sony's CES 2024 presentation hints at a device positioned as a creative alternative to Microsoft's HoloLens, aiming to revolutionize 3D design and collaboration in professional settings. Further details may unfold at Sony's booth during CES 2024. Stay tuned for updates from the event.
